1. When will the continuing education requirement begin?
In order to qualify for license renewal on July 1st, of every odd year, 12 credits of CE must be completed by April 30th of every odd year. If it is not completed by this date all licensees will be subject to an administrative penalty imposed by the NJREC in the amount of $200. Furthermore, if it is not completed you will not be able to renew your license.
2. How many continuing education hours will be required to renew or reactivate a license?
Inn order to qualify for renewal or to reinstate an un-renewed license after that date, every individual licensed as a broker, broker-salesperson or salesperson must complete 12 hours of CE.
3. Are there any mandatory course subjects?
At least six of the twelve credits must be obtained in courses within the “core topics,” specified at N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.4. The six shall include at least 2 credit hours on ethics. The remainder can be electives.
4. I’ve been a broker for over 25 years. Will I be grandfathered in and waived from CE?
No. The law does not include any provision for a waiver of the CE requirement based upon length of time in the business.
5. What do I do if I did not get all my CE hours by my license expiration date?
You will not be able to renew and your license will expire. You must then complete the CE requirements, complete the process for reinstatement and pay the necessary fees.
6. I just received my salesperson’s license. Do I need CE in this license period?
You do not need to take CE if you became licensed within the second year of the licensing term. See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3(a)(3).
7. Will I get credit for taking a broker prelicensure education course?
Yes, any person who completes a broker course within the two year license term is deemed to have fulfilled the CE requirement for the licensing term in which the broker’s course was completed. See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3(a)(2).
8. How do I report my CE?
CE hours will be reported by the provider of the course to the vendor maintaining the database of credits obtained by licensees. You should retain the proof of your completion of a course that is required to be supplied to you by the course provider in case any questions arise on your having completed the course and earned CE credit for having done so.
9. I have real estate licenses in more than one state. Will my CE credits from those states be transferable?
Yes, as long as those courses are approved for CE credit by the licensing authority in the other state, have been assigned a course approval number by the Commission, and are in an elective topic. See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.13(b).
10. If I also have a New Jersey appraiser license or mortgage banker, broker or loan originator license, will the CE credits I earn toward those credentials apply towards my real estate CE credit requirements?
Yes, as long as a course is approved as a pre-licensure or continuing education course in this state in a profession related to real estate brokerage, and the provider has obtained an identification number from the Commission, you can earn elective course credit toward the real estate CE requirement. See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.13(b).
11. Are all real estate licensees required to complete continuing education in order to renew/reactivate their licenses?
All salespersons, broker-salespersons and brokers are required to fulfill the required CE requirement in order to renew their license or reinstate an un-renewed license. Licensed referral agents are not required to complete CE. However, they will be required to complete CE in order to change their license type to that of a salesperson or broker-salesperson or individual broker.
